Remembering the Brave: A Memorial Day Thank You

Remembering the Brave: A Memorial Day Thank You

Memorial Day is one of those days that always makes me stop for a moment and really think about the people behind the uniforms, the families behind the folded flags, and the lives that were changed forever because someone chose to serve.

It's easy to think of holidays as just another day off, a long weekend, a chance to fire up the grill, spend time with family, or enjoy the first little taste of summer. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying those things. But Memorial Day carries a meaning that deserves a little more of our attention, too.

Today is about remembering the men and women who gave their lives while serving our country. People who had families, friends, dreams, plans for the future, and people waiting for them to come home. People who were someone's child, someone's spouse, someone's parent, someone's best friend. They were real people with whole lives beyond their service, and their sacrifices deserve to be remembered with more than a passing thought.

I don't think we can ever truly understand the weight of that sacrifice unless we've lived close to it ourselves. We can read the stories, see the memorials, listen to the accounts of those who were there, and try our best to imagine what those families have endured. But there are some kinds of loss that words will never quite be able to hold.

And that's why remembering matters.

To the families who have lost someone in service to this country, I hope you know that your loved ones are not forgotten. I hope today brings you moments of comfort alongside the grief, and I hope you feel surrounded by people who understand that remembrance doesn't end when the holiday does. The empty chair, the photographs, the stories that get told over and over again, and the memories that sneak up on you when you least expect them are all part of a love that doesn't simply disappear.

To those who have served and continue to serve, thank you. Although Memorial Day specifically honors those who died in military service, I also want to acknowledge the living service members and veterans who carry their own experiences, hardships, and memories with them long after their time in uniform. Your dedication matters, and I hope you know that your service is appreciated.

I also want to remember the people who serve quietly in the background, the families who endure long separations, the children who grow up missing a parent, the spouses who hold everything together at home, and the loved ones who spend holidays, birthdays, and ordinary Tuesdays hoping for a safe return. Military service affects more than the person wearing the uniform, and the people who stand beside them deserve compassion and recognition, too.

I've always believed that gratitude is most meaningful when we actually take the time to understand what we're grateful for. So today, I hope we can all take a moment to do a little more than post a flag or say a quick thank you. Maybe visit a memorial. Maybe learn the story of a fallen service member. Maybe reach out to a military family or take a quiet moment to reflect on the freedoms and opportunities we sometimes take for granted.

We don't all have to express our gratitude in the same way. We simply need to remember that behind every name engraved on a memorial is a human life that mattered.

To every service member who made the ultimate sacrifice, may your memory be honored, your courage remembered, and your legacy carried forward by the people you left behind and the generations who come after you.

And to the families who continue to carry your memories, there are no words that can make that loss fair or fill the spaces left behind. But I hope you know that today, and every day, your loved ones deserve to be remembered.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you to those who gave everything.

May we never take their sacrifice lightly. May we never forget the people behind the names. And may we always remember that the freedom to enjoy an ordinary day is something many brave souls never got to come home and experience again.

Wishing everyone a peaceful and reflective Memorial Day.
