Mile 22 is an action thriller film directed by Peter Berg starring Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, Iko Uwais, John Malkovich, and Ronda Rousey. With a runtime of 94 minutes and rated R, this movie is a fast, brutal, and unapologetically intense military thriller that wastes very little time getting to the action. It combines tactical missions, international espionage, gunfights, hand to hand combat, and plenty of explosive chaos into one compact adrenaline rush. This is definitely not a movie that wants you to relax. From the beginning, it throws you into the middle of the madness and keeps the pressure on.

What Worked

The biggest strength of Mile 22 is its intensity. This movie moves like it has somewhere to be. The relatively short runtime works in its favor because there is very little unnecessary downtime. Once the mission begins, the tension keeps climbing and the action comes at you quickly.

Mark Wahlberg brings a chaotic intensity to James Silva that fits the character perfectly. Silva is brilliant, aggressive, impatient, and not exactly someone you would want to have as your boss. Wahlberg plays that abrasive personality without trying to make Silva overly likable, which actually makes the character more interesting.

Iko Uwais is another major highlight. His performance as Li Noor gives the movie some of its best action sequences. Whenever he gets involved in a fight, things immediately become more interesting. His martial arts skills are put to excellent use, and the hand to hand combat feels sharp, fast, and appropriately vicious.

The supporting cast also adds plenty of personality. Lauren Cohan brings a strong presence to Alice Kerr, while John Malkovich gets to have fun as the team's experienced and slightly eccentric leader. Their interactions give the movie a bit of breathing room between the explosions.

The action itself is another major win. Mile 22 has a gritty style that makes its firefights and close combat feel dangerous rather than overly polished. The movie is constantly throwing obstacles at the team, which creates a satisfying sense of urgency.

What Didn’t Work

The biggest issue is that Mile 22 can sometimes become a little too frantic. The editing and constant movement fit the movie's aggressive style, but there are moments when it feels like the film is deliberately trying to overwhelm the audience.
