Tsaganaki (Greek Fried Cheese) Recipe

Tsaganaki (Greek Fried Cheese) Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces Greek kefalotyri cheese (or substitute with halloumi or kasseri cheese)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Olive oil, for frying
  • 1 lemon, cut into wedges
  • Optional: honey or fig jam for serving

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cheese:

    • Slice the kefalotyri cheese into thick slices, about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Season the Flour:

    • In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour, dried oregano, dried thyme, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.
  3. Coat the Cheese:

    • Dredge each slice of cheese in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat all sides evenly. Shake off any excess flour.
  4. Heat the Olive Oil:

    • In a large skillet, heat enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the pan over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
  5. Fry the Cheese:

    • Carefully place the coated cheese slices in the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the cheese slices for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
  6. Drain and Serve:

    • Remove the fried cheese slices from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  7. Serve Hot:

    • Serve the tsaganaki hot, garnished with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over the cheese. Optionally, you can serve tsaganaki with a drizzle of honey or a dollop of fig jam for a sweet and savory flavor contrast.
  8. Enjoy:

    • Enjoy this delicious and crispy Greek fried cheese as a mezze appetizer or part of a Greek-style meze platter. It's best enjoyed immediately while still hot and gooey in the center!
