Tsaganaki (Greek Fried Cheese) Recipe
Ingredients:
- 8 ounces Greek kefalotyri cheese (or substitute with halloumi or kasseri cheese)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- Pinch of black pepper
- Olive oil, for frying
- 1 lemon, cut into wedges
- Optional: honey or fig jam for serving
Instructions:
-
Prepare the Cheese:
- Slice the kefalotyri cheese into thick slices, about 1/2 inch thick.
-
Season the Flour:
- In a shallow dish, combine the all-purpose flour, dried oregano, dried thyme, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.
-
Coat the Cheese:
- Dredge each slice of cheese in the seasoned flour mixture, making sure to coat all sides evenly. Shake off any excess flour.
-
Heat the Olive Oil:
- In a large skillet, heat enough olive oil to cover the bottom of the pan over medium-high heat until hot but not smoking.
-
Fry the Cheese:
- Carefully place the coated cheese slices in the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the cheese slices for 1-2 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
-
Drain and Serve:
- Remove the fried cheese slices from the skillet and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
-
Serve Hot:
- Serve the tsaganaki hot, garnished with lemon wedges on the side for squeezing over the cheese. Optionally, you can serve tsaganaki with a drizzle of honey or a dollop of fig jam for a sweet and savory flavor contrast.
-
Enjoy:
- Enjoy this delicious and crispy Greek fried cheese as a mezze appetizer or part of a Greek-style meze platter. It's best enjoyed immediately while still hot and gooey in the center!
