Koulourakia Greek Easter Cookie Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg yolk (for egg wash)
  • Sesame seeds or slivered almonds for topping (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven:

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. Cream Butter and Sugar:

    • In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add Wet Ingredients:

    • Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until well combined. Then add the milk, vanilla extract, and orange zest, and mix until smooth.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients:

    • In a separate bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Mix the Dough:

    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft dough forms. The dough should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  6. Shape the Cookies:

    • Pinch off small pieces of dough and roll them into ropes about 4-5 inches long. Shape the ropes into various designs such as braids, twists, or circles. Traditional koulourakia shapes include spirals, twists, and figure-eights.
  7. Egg Wash and Topping:

    • In a small bowl, whisk the egg yolk with a tablespoon of water to create an egg wash. Brush the tops of the shaped cookies with the egg wash. If desired, sprinkle sesame seeds or press slivered almonds onto the cookies for decoration.
  8. Bake the Cookies:

    • Place the shaped cookies onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each cookie.
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden brown on the edges.
  9. Cool and Serve:

    • Allow the koulourakia cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. Enjoy:

  • Once cooled, serve these delightful Greek cookies alongside a cup of coffee or tea for a delicious treat enjoyed during festive occasions or as a delightful snack any time of the year!

Note: Koulourakia cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. They can also be frozen for longer storage. Allow them to thaw at room temperature before serving.
